Analysis of innovation through corporate entrepreneurship: a case study from a service multinational (2019)

- Abstract: Past research has shown that there are multiple ways a company can organize its innovation strategy. This paper connects current research in innovation and corporate entrepreneurship from multiple perspectives including terminology, strategy, innovation programs, corporate configuration, methodology, and team perspective. Drawing from published literature this research objective was to investigate the practices of a service multinational when promoting innovation through corporate entrepreneurship. It involved a review of public documents published by the company and interviews with key employees. The data was collected and organized following a framework of four dimensions proposed in the literature: i) strategy, ii) structure and resources, iii) environment and iv) entrepreneur / intrapreneur. As a result, it was identified that most of the company’s practices were in line with the theory and configure what is understood by corporate entrepreneurship. Besides, they have obtained real innovative outputs for the innovation area and fomented a distinct mindset for those working on short and long term impact. Challenging points were also identified, such as: strong use of corporate acquisition as outside-in flow of newness, managing risks associated with innovation and balancing scope versus expectation for the innovation area. Above all, the present study made unique contributions to its field by elucidating the real experience of a large organization.
